Diary of a Start-Up: The Power of a Network

I’ve just returned from one of the most fun and touching days I’ve had in a while. We have as of today, found a name (well, several actually that we need to decide upon) for the business.

Lead by Colum Lowe of Being Design, an old colleague that I now count as a friend gave up his Saturday to help us create the name. He is an expert in helping businesses find a brand image and using design as a strategic pillar of business of which I am a massive believer. It is worth listing out everyone who came on an individual basis as I thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart for showing the commitment, willingness and generosity to give up your time to work with us.

Colum Lowe – brand designer, leading man!
David Marshall – co-founder of Project S
Lynn Wallington – a reliable taxi service and excellent thesaurus navigator
Katy Wallington – bang in the target market
Dan Broughton – Sales Director at Cadburys UK – comment of the day = ‘people have preconceived notions and attachments in their head – trying to swim against them is difficult so embrace the symbols and elements that are already attached to what you’re doing and exploit them’
Andy ‘The Artist’ Hammond – portrait and illustration expert
Emma Potter – the most intelligent consultant I know who helped us focus the discussion on what really matters!
Daniel Potter – Emma’s brother who sits also right bang in the target market
Nzube Ufodike – venture capital advisor, travelled for over 3 hours to join us and for that deserves a huge special mention!

Thanks to all of you for your time and generosity. I think this shows just how important it is to generate a network of people that you can rely on. At one point or another I like to think that I have helped all of the above people in one way or another and they have repaid any debt with a huge repayment of their time at the weekend.

As such, a name has been born. It can’t be revealed just yet as we are still tinkering but it’s exciting as it’s a real entity now that can start to be turned into a brand.
